Summer is traditionally a slow time of year for collegiate retailers, so how do you increase interaction with your fans and followers? Why, with a selfie-themed contest, of course! From June 1- Aug. 15, the University Co-op invited the Longhorn community to take pictures during their summer travels and submit them through Instagram or Facebook, tagged with #LonghornSelfie. The prizes available were 20 $20 gift cards and a Co-op GameDay package which included two tickets to a UT home football game, as well as Longhorn accessories and apparel.
The store received nearly 300 entries from all over the world, with Longhorns posing in front of landmarks, underwa
ter, skydiving and in the cockpit of a fighter plane. While not all of the pictures entered technically qualified as selfies, they certainly provided a fun way to keep up with the Longhorn community during summer vacation. (View all of the entries here.)
“We expected amazing entries — Longhorns are pretty awesome travelers,” said William Kelleher, promotions manager. “I think the contest was a huge success. A lot had to do with our 10,000+ Instagram following. That helped spread the word. It was an awesome way to interact with our community during slow summer days.”
Kelleher also offered some great advice for other stores who might want to try a similar contest: “Associate a contest with something people are already doing and offer a great prize. We knew people were going to be taking lots of pictures while they were traveling this summer andlots of them were going to be selfies. You just need to find what fits with the demographic you are targeting with your promotion and go from there.”
“Social media continues to become a larger part of everyone's life. If you aren’t finding ways to connect with students and alumni, you are missing out on a large opportunity, “Kelleher said. “ Not all platforms are equal. You should have a strategy for each one.”
